Lets Meet Flavia.... Engage's Youth Mentoring Schools Coordinator
My working background was in the Travel and Event industry for many years before I was presented with the opportunity to be a mentor with Engage. The desire to be involved as a mentor came through my daughter experiencing bullying herself at her school. Seeing her go through it all left me feeling helpless at being unable to support her adequately This set me thinking that if I couldn’t help my daughter, then at least I could maybe help someone else’s child, to support them and to try to make a difference, I just wanted to help.
In the Lichfield Volunteer Centre, I came across an advertisement for mentors for a local youth charity. Further enquiries led me to meeting Tina (Project Manager at the time) then to doing some mentoring training and, in 2018, becoming an official Engage mentor.
Whilst volunteering, I began to see the potential of Engage and the good work that they were doing, and after further conversations with Tina, I became more involved in the everyday running of the project. In 2021 I was offered a paid part- time role as Engage’s School’s Coordinator. I absolutely love what I do, being able to help students, research resources, develop new ideas, projects and workshops, coordinate training courses, etc. I can really see all the positive outcomes of the work Engage does in positively affecting change and transformation in the lives of the young people they engage with!
As well as the Co-ordinators role, I still value my role as a hands-on mentor, as there is something amazing being able to help young people overcome barriers and challenges in their lives and live up to their true potential.
